Site Remediation Progress

Union Pacific is committed to the safety and sustainability of the 29th and Grove community. Our efforts at the 29th and Grove site in Wichita, Kansas, began over two decades ago when contamination was first detected. Since then, under a work plan approved by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE), we have conducted thousands of tests of groundwater, soil, outdoor and indoor air, and implemented numerous remedial actions to address contamination.

Following the discovery of trichloroethylene (TCE) contamination, Union Pacific took immediate and sustained action:

  • We removed over 1,200 tons of contaminated soil from the source area adjacent to our rail yard, taking careful measures to safely and effectively contain and remove the contaminants.
  • A sophisticated groundwater cleanup system was installed to control, remove, and treat the contaminants, safeguarding the community’s water resources.
  • We established a network of monitoring wells to track the progress of the cleanup efforts.

These efforts have led to significant reductions in TCE levels in the groundwater, marking considerable progress in remediating the source area.

Work is ongoing, and as part of our commitment, we are enhancing our efforts to keep the community informed and involved.
