Community Open House Offers Update on 29th and Grove Remediation Efforts

WICHITA, Kan. (July 29, 2025) – More than 60 residents, community leaders and environmental experts came together on July 12 to discuss progress and next steps for remediation efforts in the 29th and Grove neighborhood of Wichita.

The open house, hosted by Union Pacific and the Action for 29th and Grove initiative in partnership with the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE), offered residents the chance to review testing results, learn about planned remediation work and speak directly with environmental specialists.

Information shared during the event included:

  • Plans to extend a groundwater treatment system to help further reduce TCE concentrations in groundwater.
  • Indoor air testing results from over 20 participating properties, with no immediate health concerns identified from seasonal samples.
  • A neighborhood well survey that found no active drinking water wells and two functioning lawn or garden wells.
  • Ongoing coordination between Union Pacific, KDHE and city officials on
    future work in the area.

Outreach is continuing across the KDHE-defined testing area. Union Pacific has contacted residents through door-to-door visits, mailers and digital updates. Free indoor air testing remains available to eligible property owners. Residents can learn more or sign up at actionfor29thandgrove.com.

Those who weren’t able to attend the open house can still schedule a virtual or in-person meeting to ask questions and receive updates. To make an appointment, call 866-896-7511 or email 29grove@up.com.
