WICHITA, Kan. (Sept. 14, 2026) – Residents, community leaders and environmental experts gathered at an open house Sept. 12 to discuss next steps for remediation efforts in Wichita’s 29th and Grove neighborhood.
Union Pacific joined the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) to share the recently approved engineering design for the groundwater cleanup systems and provide updates on upcoming construction activities.
Information shared during the event included:
- KDHE is reviewing Union Pacific’s applications for National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permits for discharging the clean, treated water to Chisholm Creek.
- Union Pacific will issue bid requests and select a contractor to build groundwater cleanup systems.
- Construction can begin after the selected contractor secures required permits and obtains the supplies, materials and equipment needed to build the systems.
- Union Pacific, KDHE and city officials continue coordinating future work in the area.
