Efforts prioritize sustainable solutions, incorporating insights gained from recent testing on soil, water and air quality
WICHITA, Kan. (April 25, 2025) – Union Pacific remains committed to the 29th and Grove community as it progresses remediation activities. Among the next steps are installation of new extraction wells to further reduce contaminated groundwater in the plume. These actions, carried out in collaboration with the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE), reflect an ongoing dedication to continued cleanup, long-term monitoring and transparent communication through regular community updates.
“Union Pacific’s promise to the community is continued action as they execute their remediation plan,” said Christina Long, community liaison for the Action for 29th and Grove project. “They recognize residents’ concerns and are committed to earning trust through meaningful engagement, tangible progress and ongoing action.”
Building on last year’s progress through soil gas assessments and indoor air testing, Union Pacific is advancing its remediation efforts to include the following:
- Additional outreach to property owners in designated sampling zones for access agreements to conduct air quality testing, providing individual results and consultation to discuss findings. To date, all livable indoor spaces are within safe screening levels, with only one home requiring mitigation.
- Additional treatment systems, including extraction wells, will be installed to remove and treat contaminated groundwater, reducing the plume and lowering concentration levels.
- Finalize designs, secure permits and establish agreements with City of Wichita and KDHE for additional treatment facilities in the 29th and Grove plume area.
- Excavating and removing impacted soil from targeted areas to further reduce contamination levels.
In addition to remediation efforts, Union Pacific will continue to keep residents engaged through ongoing, transparent communication. Regular updates will be shared via Action for 29th and Grove channels. Key project milestones will be communicated, to keep residents informed.
